Overview

Zerodol S is a combination tablet made by Ipca Laboratories Ltd. Each tablet contains aceclofenac 100mg and serratiopeptidase 15mg. It is used for pain relief.

  • Aceclofenac 100mg — anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAID)
  • Serratiopeptidase 15mg — protein-digesting enzyme
  • Usual aceclofenac limit: 200mg a day
  • Take only as your doctor prescribes

Uses

Zerodol S is used for pain relief. According to each ingredient’s official product information:

  • Aceclofenac relieves pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Serratiopeptidase is an enzyme that helps clear fluid at the site of inflammation and reduce swelling.

Also available: Zerodol SP (with acetaminophen) and Zerodol 100mg. See more pain relievers.

How it works

  • Aceclofenac blocks the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzyme, which reduces the body’s production of prostaglandins — chemicals involved in pain, swelling and inflammation.
  • Serratiopeptidase breaks down substances involved in inflammation (such as bradykinin), which helps clear fluid from inflamed tissue, reduce swelling and improve local blood flow.

Dosage

Take Zerodol S exactly as your doctor prescribes. Important dose limits from the official aceclofenac label:

  • Aceclofenac: the usual adult dose is 200mg a day (each Zerodol S tablet has 100mg, so 200mg is the amount in 2 tablets). Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
  • Aceclofenac is preferably taken with or after food.
  • Liver problems: the aceclofenac dose should be reduced; ask your doctor.
  • Older people: more likely to have serious side effects and should be checked regularly for stomach bleeding.
  • Children: aceclofenac is not recommended for children.

Safety warning

  • Do not take Zerodol S if you: are allergic to any of its ingredients; have an active or repeated stomach ulcer or bleeding; have had stomach bleeding or a perforation from an NSAID; have had asthma, runny nose, swelling or hives after aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAIDs; have liver or kidney failure; have heart failure, heart disease, poor circulation in the legs, or stroke/mini-stroke; have active bleeding or a bleeding disorder; or are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
  • Stomach bleeding: NSAIDs can cause bleeding, ulcers or perforation at any time, with or without warning, and this can be fatal. Stop and get help if you have black stools or vomit blood.
  • Bleeding (serratiopeptidase): serratiopeptidase might reduce blood clotting and increase bruising and bleeding, especially with blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines.
  • Heart and blood vessels: aceclofenac is broken down to diclofenac, which is linked to a small increase in the risk of heart attack or stroke. It can also cause fluid retention and swelling.
  • Kidneys and liver: NSAIDs can worsen kidney function and may affect the liver. Long-term use needs regular kidney, liver and blood tests.
  • Skin: very rare but serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis) have been reported with NSAIDs. Stop at the first sign of a rash, mouth sores or an allergic reaction.
  • Asthma: NSAIDs can trigger breathing problems in people with asthma.
  • May cause dizziness, drowsiness or tiredness — if affected, do not drive or use machines.

Side effects

Common side effects of aceclofenac (up to 1 in 10 people) include:

  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Raised liver enzymes

Less common or rare effects include vomiting, gas, constipation, mouth ulcers, itching, rash, swelling (edema), high blood pressure, stomach ulcer or bleeding, black stools, liver problems or jaundice, kidney problems, low blood counts and severe skin reactions. Get medical help straight away for any serious symptom.

Interactions

  • Other NSAIDs, including aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and COX-2 inhibitors: avoid — more stomach side effects and bleeding.
  • Blood thinners such as warfarin and antiplatelet medicines (such as clopidogrel): higher risk of bleeding from both ingredients; ask your doctor first.
  • Corticosteroids and SSRI antidepressants: higher risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding.
  • Blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors, ARBs) and diuretics: their effect may be reduced and the risk of kidney problems goes up.
  • Lithium, digoxin and methotrexate: their levels or toxicity may increase.
  • Cyclosporine and tacrolimus: higher risk of kidney damage.
  • Quinolone antibiotics: possible higher risk of seizures.
  • Mifepristone: NSAIDs should not be used for 8–12 days after it.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you take.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Do not use aceclofenac in the last 3 months (third trimester) of pregnancy. In the first 6 months it should only be used if clearly needed, at the lowest dose for the shortest time. Aceclofenac should be avoided while breastfeeding unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risk, and it may reduce female fertility. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use.

Storage

Store below 30°C (86°F). Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQs

What is in Zerodol S?

Each tablet contains aceclofenac 100mg and serratiopeptidase 15mg. It is made by Ipca Laboratories.

What is the difference between Zerodol S and Zerodol SP?

Zerodol SP also contains acetaminophen (paracetamol) 325mg. Zerodol S has only aceclofenac and serratiopeptidase.

How many Zerodol S tablets can I take a day?

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. Each tablet has 100mg of aceclofenac, and the official aceclofenac label gives a usual adult dose of 200mg a day (the amount in 2 tablets).

Can I take it with ibuprofen or aspirin?

No. Aceclofenac is an NSAID, and taking it with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin raises the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects.

Can I take Zerodol S with a blood thinner?

Ask your doctor first. Both aceclofenac and serratiopeptidase can increase the risk of bleeding with blood thinners such as warfarin or antiplatelet medicines such as clopidogrel.

Can I take Zerodol S during pregnancy?

Aceclofenac must not be used in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and earlier only if clearly needed. Ask your doctor before using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
